ANYWHERE THERE'S A FENCE, YOU'LL FIND LOTS OF TRASH!
Anywhere there's a fence, you'll find lots of trash. And anywhere there's a fence leading up to an entrance ramp, you'll find even more trash!
People are quick to criticize the trash around entrance and exit ramps, but how many of those people find a place to park and walk over and pick up the bags and bags of trash that makes our city look bad? Unfortunately, not very many. That's because it's really hard.
If picking up the trash was all we needed to do, it wouldn't be so hard. Some volunteers for Keep Akron Beautiful clean entrance and exit ramps and leave the bags for someone to come pick up. Unfortunately, I've seen the bags sitting there for weeks and weeks.
Even though it's very hard, I try to take my bags to a dumpster and get rid of them.
The reason there's so much trash beside a fence is because the wind blows the trash there, and it's trapped! I love seeing a fence holding the trash still for me, especially on a windy day.
Wouldn't it be nice if all our main streets leading up to entrance ramps looked like this?
I had an idea driving home today, seeing all the new trash from the cold weather when I couldn't get out to pick up trash.
How about some kind of trash can with a big open top that can be reached from a car window? A drive by trash can?
It could be placed near lights where people are stopped. I think it might help a lot.
I may think more about this idea, because picking up all the trash is only one part of the solution to our trash problem. Stopping people from littering is the part that would help the most, but nobody knows how to stop people from throwing their garbage on the ground.
We could post more signs, "LITTERING IS A CRIME $100 FINE." But who's going to enforce that? I see the most litter laying on the ground beside signs that say "Do Not Litter."
