YOU SEE ALL KINDS OF THINGS PICKING UP TRASH!

I've been inside 13 days in a row because of the cold weather and snow.  I really need to get out tomorrow and pick up a lot of trash, because there's a lot of trash to pick up!  All the areas I was keeping pretty clean look really bad right now, but it doesn't take long to pick up new trash.

You meet all kinds of interesting people and see all kinds of crazy things walking around picking up trash.  Everybody is nice to you, because they don't want to do what you're doing.

I was cleaning a street off Beardsley, and I saw this man outside cleaning up debris from a wind storm.

Look at that tree!  His daughter's brand new car was parked on the street, and had the tree not lodged in the Y of another tree, it would have landed on the roof of her car!  How crazy is that?

He was VERY grateful.  What are the chances the wind would blow that tree over and it would catch in the Y of another tree?  I told him he should play the lottery!

I know where all the nice trash cans are in Firestone Park.  The City of Akron tries to place them in high litter areas, and Virginia & Wilbeth is a very high litter area.  I try to clean this area every week. I can pick up enough trash to fill my bucket from the parking lot to the corner.  Then I empty it in this trash can.

I turned the corner one day, and someone had set fire to one of my favorite trash cans!  It was melted onto the street.  Why would anyone destroy something like this?

Maybe someone threw a lit cigarette into the trash can and caught other trash on fire.  I can't imagine an accidental fire big enough to melt a trash can like this.  It had to be an act of vandalism.

I reported it to the City, and they came out and hauled it away.  They cleaned up the mess, but they did not replace the trash can.  I guess this corner only gets one chance to have a nice trash can.

And just a few weeks ago, I saw a Giant Eagle bag blowing in the wind, so I went up onto the grass to pick it up.  It didn't budge.  Upon closer inspection, I saw there was a frozen turkey in the bag.  Can you believe that?  Who would throw away a 25-pound turkey?

I'm thinking that someone probably put it in the refrigerator to thaw out and forgot about it?  But doesn't a turkey take up half a shelf?  How could you forget it?  It probably started spoiling, so they threw it out in the yard, because they were too lazy to carry it to the dumpster.

My aunt, who lives in the Allegheny Mountains of Pennsylvania, told me the buzzards and crows would have cleaned it up.  My question is, do we have buzzards and crows in the City of Akron?

I didn't wait around for it to start stinking.  It was in someone's yard, right off the sidewalk.  I carried it to the dumpster and got rid of it.

Because that's what I do.
