THERE IS STILL A LOT OF BROKEN GLASS IN AKRON!
Driving home last night, I noticed a glass bottle at the corner of my street. So the first thing I did this morning was go pick it up. It was not broken into tiny pieces, like they usually are. I'll bet the person who threw it was disappointed it didn't explode.
I started picking up trash on Wilbeth, by the Bridgestone Firestone parking lot. I saw this piece of glass, and I knew the rest of this bottle was close by. That's a lesson I wish I had known before Henry got cut by broken glass.
Now, if I see ANY glass, I search for the rest of the bottle. It's usually hidden in the grass, like the sharp piece was when Henry cut his nose.
Dogs sniff in the grass, and they go potty in the grass, so they are pretty defenseless if there's broken glass hiding in the grass.
It's up to us to keep our sidewalks safe for our pets.
Yesterday, I swept up 24 broken bottles. Today, 11. That's a lot. Since February 3, 2023, I have swept up 591 piles of broken glass.
It won't go away. It has to be swept up by somebody. The street sweeper will take care of the glass on the streets, if someone reports it to the sanitation department.
But the sidewalks and the grass on both sides of the sidewalk are up to us.
The guy on this bike slowed down and thanked me for what I was doing.
Since the bike path is right beside speeding cars, I would think it would be really important that the bike lane be clean and free of sharp objects that could blow out a bicycle tire. But it wasn't.
It is now.
When I got to the towpath, I crossed the street, and headed back to my car. I left my full trash bag there, and went back and picked it up.
I put in a new 45 gallon bag, thinking I would fill it too. But the other side of Wilbeth Road was incredibly clean, like someone had just cleaned it.
Wait! That was me! I was there a few weeks ago! And it's still clean. That makes me feel so good to know what I'm doing really makes a difference.
You sure are making a difference Debbie! Thank you!!Debby Filliez
