WATERLOO WEST OF MAIN STREET

It was so cold today, but I bundled up and went out anyway.  I cleaned Firestone, only 326 pieces.  That was pretty easy.

Then I headed over to Waterloo, west of Main Street.  Someone told me, at the Community Meeting, that it was really bad.  I don't think "bad" truly describes what I saw.  Look at the first picture!  Where do you even begin with this much trash?  You begin by picking up one piece at a time.  That's where.

I could say it was the hardest day ever, but every day is hard.  The trash here was tangled in briars, and tomorrow, I'm wearing eye protection.  Shame on me for thinking I can climb in bushes and not get poked in the eye.  That happened today, but luckily, I'm okay.

Two people stopped their cars on this unbelievably busy road and said they would come back and help me!  Yay!

I love it when people tell me they are going to join in the fight against litter.

The first person is someone I never met before.  Her name is Sandy, and she lives close by, so she wanted to help, because this is her neighborhood.  So why hasn't she already cleaned it?  Because there's too much.  I filled eight trash bags, and I'm going to ask Keep Akron Beautiful to come back and pick them up on Monday.  I plan on finishing this area tomorrow.  I'm more than half done on this side.  And the other side isn't as bad, I hope.

The other person who stopped is Tom.  Everybody knows Tom.  He's the guy who's been picking up trash in Akron for years. He focuses on Main Street, south of Waterloo, an area I don't clean, because he's already been there!  I met him last summer when I was picking up trash. He said he will come back and help too.  Yay again!

I only picked up 3,107 pieces today, because it was so hard to get the trash out of the bushes.  And it's so close to the road, I had to be really careful.

At one point, I stopped and looked across the road.  Look at all the nests!  Oh my goodness!  You can't see them when there are leaves on the trees.

What a beautiful sight this was for me when I had been looking at garbage all day!  It was almost as beautiful as the sight I saw as I drove past the area I had just cleaned.

I'm hoping by doing the deep cleaning, people will join in and keep it clean.  I spent five hours picking up trash today.  And after I get it clean, I'm guessing I will be able to clean both sides in less than a half hour!

That's why what I'm doing matters so much.
