I'M GOING TO BE ON MAIN STREET FOR A LONG, LONG TIME!

I went back to the area on Main Street I was working on yesterday.  I wanted to finish cleaning up the debris from the accident between the lightpost and a car.  What a mess!

There were car parts all through the grass and on the sidewalk.

I got it all cleaned up.

Cleaning up car parts is almost as bad as cleaning up broken glass.

Here is that big field after I picked up all the trash.

These grassy fields can only be cleaned this time of year.  As soon as the grass grows, the ticks come out, and I don't go anywhere with ticks!

After I finished that, I went to the next field.  It was so much worse!  Good grief!  The entire field looked like this.

I don't get it.  Main Street is as the name suggests, the main street going through the City of Akron, and it's a beautiful street.  Why is there so much garbage?  (It's not litter.  It's garbage.)

I worked as fast as I could for three hours, and I only picked up 1,938 pieces of trash.  Pulling cups and bags out of the tall weeds was incredibly hard, but necessary.

Driving into the City of Akron looks so much better when it's not all trashed up.  Am I only one who thinks this way?  I could have used about ten people to clean this field.

I had hoped to clean Main Street ahead of schedule, but that's not going to happen.  Not when it takes me three hours to clean each area.  I haven't even gotten to the freeway yet.  That's where it's really bad.

As much as I'd like to forget about Main Street, I'll stick with it as long as it takes.  Once it's cleaned up, it's easy to go back and pick up new trash that isn't all tangled in the grass and mowed over.

I need 3,000 pieces a day to reach my goal, so hopefully I'll catch up on the weekend.

It's actually really fun doing it this way.  If I pick up 21,000 pieces of trash in a week, I'll finish by the end of summer.  But if I pick up 24,000 pieces, I can take a day off!

  1. I would think the city would have a system in place to clean up debris after an accident. It should be standard protocol, just like dispatch of police and medics.

  2. I agree Jason. Out here in the country where I live, the sheriff and locals have a broom and dustpan and clean up broken glass and car parts. Joyce
