Why I started picking up trash
I never really noticed trash before, like most people. Not until the day my Bernedoodle, Henry, sniffed a broken wine bottle, cut his nose and was bleeding all over the sidewalk! That's when I called the City of Akron and told them, "There's broken glass and trash all over Firestone Park!" They told me they were aware there was a trash problem, but they didn't know what to do about it.
I decided to fix the problem by picking up trash on the sidewalks where I walked my dogs. I loved it so much, that I kept on picking up trash.
I do not take my dogs with me. It's too dangerous, I only walk them on sidewalks I have cleaned.
You can see my trash cart in the picture. I bought a dolly, a large trash can that fit nicely, and bungee cords to keep it in place. Since this picture was taken, I have added a recycle bin and a dustpan and broom. It glides along behind me effortlessly, and it's the only way I could pick up as much trash as I pick up. Dragging a garbage bag around is not easy.
You can also see my trash grabber. I like the ones that have the little suction cups on the ends. It will pick up a sliver of glass, and I never have to worry about straining my back bending over.
