Litter in California?
I just received a text message from my beautiful 96-year-old aunt. She just returned from a vacation in Carlsbad, California. She said, "On our hundreds of miles of travel in California, I didn't see even one piece of garbage. I wonder why. There are containers spaced a foot apart and probably very high fines for littering. The beaches have fast food restaurants, but no litter blowing around, even with strong winds."
How about that? Three things about her message amazed me. First, that she didn't see any litter in California. Second, that she was actually looking for litter in California. And third, that she took the time to tell me about it. Wow! I love her so much!
So I googled "Does California have a litter problem?" I would think since it's warm all year round, and there is a big homeless population that California would have the same litter challenges Ohio has.
I didn't get a clear answer, but I did read that California has three Keep America Beautiful affiliates: Keep California Beautiful, Keep Oakland Beautiful, and Keep Riverside Clean & Beautiful. These organizations organize community cleanups, educate the public about community improvement, and run & support grant programs to help communities.
I'm going to be smiling all day today, thinking that my aunt was looking for trash when she was on vacation! Wow! That makes me very happy.
Nice blog today! We are on our way here to be litter free someday. It takes time to educate people and you are doing just that! 😊
ReplyDeleteInteresting. I do that too when I travel. Michigan, Maine and Alaska are very clean.
ReplyDeleteYes thank you Debbie for your consistent message and hard work you do! Debby
ReplyDeleteI love that your aunt travels and that there are lots of places that are almost litter free. It can encourage you to keep doing the hard work you do!
